Volvo XC60: Acing in the segment with safety and comfort!

December 7, 2020 By Lisa

Not too long ago, we took the Volvo XC60 and pitted it against the new and upcoming – which, it was back then – updated X3. While these are two different SUVs with their inherent capabilities, what unites them is the price and size, and therefore, these sit in the same segment.

Back then the conclusion was simple, after an extensively conducted test, we decided to crown the BMW for its driving dynamics – you saw that coming, didn’t you? – and the Volvo for just about anything else. The Swedes seemed to have another mighty king in the segment.

After all, either if it’s the safety quotient or luxury, nothing comes close to a Volvo. The car you see above is the second-generation of the Volvo XC60, which the company’s mid-size luxury SUV. It was launched back in 2017 in a single-loaded trim but was updated later to two trims. Also, recently, Volvo introduced the BS-VI compliant version of the sole engine here (we’ll come to that in a bit). So, what makes the Volvo XC60 all that special? Have a go down below.

Specifications

The XC60 is both elegant and intimidating. Just like its siblings, it too gets Thor-hammer LED DRLs inside the chunky headlamps, clean lines across the body, and a pair of L-shaped LED taillamps. The ground clearance is a healthy 223mm. Moreover, the SUV has a boot-space capacity of 505-litres and a fuel tank capacity of 60-litres.

At the heart of the Volvo XC60 is a sole diesel engine. It is, of course, compliant with the new BS-VI emission standards. It features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder twin-turbo diesel, which is capable of churning out 190bhp and 400Nm of torque in the lower-spec Momentum trim. In the top-spec Inscription trim, the same engine churns out 235bhp and 480Nm of torque. Both the variants are mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox as a sole fitment.

While the XC60 is available with turbo-petrol engines in the International markets, the India-spec version only gets the 2.0-litre diesel.

Mileage

Since there’s no petrol engine on offer with the XC60, the fuel efficiency numbers are in the favour of this mid-size luxury SUV. The diesel-automatic configuration of the Volvo returns an ARAI-claimed 11.02km/l.

Features

The XC60’s interior feels familiar if you happen to be familiar with the interior layout of any other new-age Volvo. It comes with a dual-tone black and beige treatment, where the dashboard is draped in Black Nappa leather at the top with wood finish separating it from the soft-touch plastic (beige) at the bottom. It also comes with three upholstery options – Maroon Brown, Amber, and Blond.

Moreover, the XC60 is equipped with industry-leading safety gadgetry such as Adaptive cruise control, pilot assist, oncoming lane mitigation, lane-keeping aid, driver alert control, and run-off road mitigation.

A vertically-stacked touchscreen infotainment system acts as a control hub for accessing all the available features. It also supports Apple Carplay and Android Auto amongst other features.

Colours

The XC60, as of early-2020, comes in fourshades, namely, Crystal White Pearl, Black Max, Havana Brown, and Pine Grey. Needless to say, the Volvo looks elegant and sophisticated in each available shade.

Variants and Prices

As of early-2020, the Volvo XC60 is available in two variants, all in the same diesel-automatic configuration. The prices start at Rs. 52.9lakhs for the Momentum variant going all the way to Rs. 59.9lakhs for the Inscription variant (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi).
